Relocating for your dream job or even a good promotion may seem like a no-brainer, but there are several things that you should think about first. Moving to a new city or town is always an adjustment, and it can be even more daunting when you have obligations or commitments to a new job. What are some things you should ask yourself before taking the leap?
Who Else Will Your Decision Affect? (Spouses, Kids, Pets…?)
Family (including pets!) should always be a top concern. If you have children, carefully research schools in the nearby area. If possible, ask coworkers or your employer for their opinion of the local school system. Similarly, support your spouse if they are giving up their job for the move. “If you have a spouse who is giving up a job to relocate with you, ask your new employer for recommendations for employment options in your spouse’s field,”The Houston Chronicle suggests. “Some companies have ‘trailing spouse’ programs in which they provide job placement assistance for spouses of new employees.” Finally, carefully plan how you will relocate with pets, if applicable. Remember, you may need to find pet-friendly hotels or accommodations as you are traveling or relocating.
Where Am I Going To Live, and When Can I Move In?
Finding an apartment or house from a distant location can be extremely challenging. Talk to your employer about possible options. Will they be providing corporate housing apartments, short term rentals, or temporary housing? Corporate housing is a long-term and cost-effective alternative to a hotel stay. Most corporate housing rentals are fully furnished, and include certain amenities, such as internet, local phone service, and cable.
Are you relocating for work? Before committing to anything, carefully consider your spouse, children, and/or pets. Ask employers about corporate housing apartments, if you will be relocating long-distance and need time to look for a suitable house or apartment.
